Here on the island, breakfast is called 'berenar', but an afternoon snack is known as 'bereneta'. It is interesting because this expression is not used in any other territories of the Balearic Islands, or Catalonia or Valencia, where the official language is Catalan.
‘Bereneta' is thought to be a diminutive of the word 'berenar', the result of a nasal dissimilation of the Latin 'merenda', which is very similar to the term 'merienda' in Spanish or 'merenda' in Italian.
